How to plant a rose
1. When you buy your new rose, you will see a thickening at the base of the rose. This “thickening” is called the scion.
2. I’m saying this at the beginning of this article, because it will play a very important role in the planting of your new rose.
3. It is important to prepare the soil before you decide to plant.
4. You can do this by making a hole of 500mm x 500mm to a depth of 500mm.
5. Place the soil you have taken out of the hole next to the hole
6. Mix a handful of bonemeal with a handful of fertilizer into the soil you have taken out
.
7. The reason for making the hole do deep was simply to loosen the soil where the new roots will grow.
8. Put a part of the removed and mixed soil back into the hole.
9. Remove the rose from the plastic bag and put it into the hole.
10. The scion I’ve talked about in the beginning must be level with the surface.
11. If it is not , lift the root ball a bit and put more soil underneath the rose, until the scion is level with the surface. (It can even be a little bit underneath the surface.)
12. Work the rest of the soil that is left around the new rose plant.
13. Water it with at least 20 liters of water.
14. Compact the soil around the rose by stepping on the soil you have just worked in.
15. Leave the rose for 24 hours and give another 20 liters of water and compact it again.
16. The reason for doing the latter is to work out all the air bubbles in the soil. If you just leave it without compacting it, the roots might rot.
17. And there you are. As easy as pie.
Planting a rose correctly give it a great head start. All you must do now is stand back and admire that beautiful roses it will produce in the future.
