Pruned roses. August 2011

Here I am in my newly pruned rose garden.  This is only a part of the roses I've pruned this winter.
The time for pruning is nearly over.  So, if you haven't pruned yet, the time is NOW.  Don't wait any longer otherwise the roses will start new growth that you will have to cut back...  All the nutrients that is left in the soil will be wasted.  You can see that I had to prune hard, because these rose bushes are standing very close to each other.   You don't have to prune so hard if your rose bushes are further apart from each other.


Always remember to use sharp cutting tools and gloves. There is no need to be nervous about pruning roses.  As long as you prune.
Cut out  all the wood that grew to the inside of the rose bush.
Next, I cut out all the old and dead wood.
When I'm finished the rose must look like a vase, with four or five strong branches left.


Then I work in some compost and bonemeal and I'm done.

What to do with your roses in winter

My name is Bennie Booysen and I want to tell you what to do with your roses during June and July during the winter (Southern Hemisphere)

At the beginning of the winter you will see your roses starting to hibernate. It is time for them to "rest" Leaves will start to yellow but your roses will still have a few flowers.

Don't start to prune yet. All you have to do now is to water less and stop fertilizing.

If you prune now, at the beginning of June, your roses will start to sprout too early and the cold will burn the new shoots.

It is better to wait until the end of June or even the end of July before you can start pruning. If you still get frost in the middle of July, wait until the weather gets hotter. Roses though are not very particular. They can withstand a lot of cold. So if you feel like pruning at the end of June, feel free to do so. Your roses will be flowering early in September either than early in October.
